- What prerequisite knowledge might students not have?

  5. Every thing in a perfect study is based on a good foundation. In such cases , students might not have proper fundamental clarity. Students should be asked questions like additions of two or three digit numbers and then go for upper case digits and so on. This might help students building a good knowledge about addition , thereafter like wise subtraction and so on.

  14. In case 1 the students just puts 7 after 400, because he has experience of putting things after one another to add.
    In case 2 he adds 7 to the number 4 because he can't find the values of 0 .
    So we may teach him place values. Examples of objects or money may help

    First, we have to teach them about ones place and tenth place digits.So can they do these types of problems. Questions based on real life on addition should be asked to students so, they can do the problems by relating them in real lifes.

The student does not have the knowledge of place value of the digits of a number..But here I think if a student knows counting the numbers after 400 than he will count 401,402,403,404,405,406,407 and he can say the correct answer 407 and he can also write it correctly . So the students must be taught about counting of the numbers properly through ELPS method which helps in addition of a single digit number with a big number..

    We can ask them questions based on their real life experiences to clear their mathematical fundamental understanding like:

    Now how much money you got from your parents in sum total?
    👉We can also clear their understanding by drawing picture on blackboard/white board based on the same theme too.

    For this solution we can assist our student by asking some procedural questions. Those may be as follows..
    1) Have you arranged the both numbers in right way...?
    2) Have you put the one digits of both numbers in right places...?
    3) Have you added the digits in right discipline..?
    4) Do you have any doubt about the addition of numbers..?
    5) Can I help you in any way for better understanding..?
    6) Shall we practice some more examples for better understanding.? . etc..

  50. When a teacher put a math problem regarding addition they solved in this way that400+7=4007,and400+7=1100.Hear the students may not have prerequisite knowledge regarding addition. It seems that the students have not the knowledge of place value of numerals and its arrangement. First teacher should try to understand their problem and try to solve them without their previous knowledge regarding addition. Teacher must ask such type of questions I, e are you able to read and recognise the numbers? Have you arranged both numbers in right place? Do you know about digital systemand place value of numbers? Do you know the addition through column system and line system? Have you placed both numbers in one place first? Have you saw the numbers for ten place? If there s no number for ten place have you added the digits in right discipline at one place? Do you have any doubts? Do you want any assistance fro me or from your peers? Shall we try to practice the exercise having more illustration before? Have you assess the answer is correct? Have your friends assessed your sum whether it is correct or not? In this way we teachers should ask questions of analysis and synthesis by which students can better understand that misconception and solve problem with best understanding. The importance of 0 and how does it act in addition is also an important factor where students confuse. This should be revealed to them. Then the addition concept can be followed up. Following questions may help them to solve the above problem.

    2. Which is the unit digit?
    3. What is the place value of
    0 here?
    3. What do you see in the 2nd
    or ten's column?
    3.In which column do you see

    so what should we write
    here to show " nothing"?

    And to make it easy for them, we can ask questions like,
    1 ) how many digits has 1st number?
    2) could you tell me name of the number#? And then place value of each digits.

    Same for 2nd number.

    Again ask them to place the digits of 2nd number below the same place of 1st number to add/sub.

    # If students name the number accurately its good otherwise further we can ask them to recall places names as Unit, tens, hundreds from right to left to help them recognise the number name..
    This will definitely make them understand their mistakes and will do accurately further.

  73. Students have no idea of place value as previous knowledge. Teacher can make them understood about place value of numbers by using abacus to add both the numbers correctly. Apart from this, teacher can use another method like , ask the students 7 consecutive numbers of 400 by adding 1 seven times.

  77. When the students face such type of problem that means they are unable to know the place value of digits in number systems.so it will be our first and foremost duty to aware them about place value in mathematics using chart and TLM.
    We must ask different questions regarding place values of various digits and how to use in addition as per their place value in number systems .
