Module 9-Activity 5: Reflect
A said ‘if length of a rectangle is increased by 1 and breadth decreased by 1 the area enclosed by the rectangle remains the same’. B said ‘No, A is wrong as the new area will increase’. C said ‘No, A and B both are wrong, the new area will decrease’. How will you handle this situation?
Thinking is necessary to reflect inner idea to put solve math.

ReplyDeleteTeacher should explain perfectly the area concept about a rectangle and its formula through a visual aids
ReplyDeleteA teacher should draw a rectangle. She/he should discuss 4-6 examples regarding that rectangle. 1st, she/he should take a fix length, breadth and find out the area. Then she/he should take 4-5 examples of decreasing one of them by 1 and increasing one of them by 1. Hence, the answer can be found.
ReplyDeleteOr, they can also proof it theoretically.
Hear C is correct answer.A teacher should draw a rectangle and find its area. Then draw a said new rectangle and find its area. Now compare both areas. Next he can easily gets answer.
DeleteIt can be explained through different teaching activities. Teaching should be done in using visual aids.
ReplyDeleteTo handle this situation ,I will ask them to do it by themself using different TLMs and find the answer.I can also help them in need..
ReplyDeleteIn this situation first of all the teacher should clerify the method of calculating the area of a rectangle by using visual aids.then the teacher may follow the method of induction by taking more than 3 examples and justify the answer.
ReplyDeleteAs length is the longest side of a rectangle and according to the question the length is increased by 1 unit means the fraction of increase in length is less as compared to breadth so the area will decrease.for example,if L=100 n B= 2 so decrease in breadth by 1 means reduction by 50% but the% increase in length is much less if we increase by 1 unit.and if we change the question by increasing the breadth n decrease in length, then the area will increase.only deviation is if the difference between L & B is 1 then the area will be same.
ReplyDeleteThe answer of c is right.

Teacher should explain to the students
ReplyDeleteThe teacher will explain it by drawing a rectangle with numerical example. If the length of a rectangle is 5 CM n bredth is 4cm, it's area is 20 sq CM. If the length increases by 1 it will be6cm n the breadth decreases by1 will be 3 CM. It's area will be 18 sq CM.
ReplyDeleteC is right.
ReplyDeleteIn order to get the students convinced following steps may be taken.
1. Each of the students will be provided with a cardboard of rectangular size and asked to measure its length and breadth and also find out its area by multiplying the both.
2. Then they will be instructed to draw rectangles increasing 1 in the length and reducing 1 from the breadth of the cardboard rectangles and also find the area to see the difference.
This activity may be done twice or thrice with some other rectangles.
First of all I'll encourage the pupils to carefully observe picturical presentation of the problem and explain before them correctly about formulae and ideas relating to this problem
ReplyDeleteI would like to handle this situation by following steps:
ReplyDelete1- Let my children know the formula of area calculation of a rectangle which is:
Area of a rectangle=Length*breath
2- Then I would like to give them an example based on this question and draw 2 rectangles on black board based on the question. Like:
👉Let the length & breath of a rectangle is 4m & 3 m respectively.
(I will draw a rectangle on blackboard having length & breath 4m & 3m)
👉Now ask my children to find out the area of this rectangle by putting the formula.
Length*breath=4m*3m=12 Square meters
👉Now I draw another rectangle having length & breath 5m & 2m(according to the instruction given in the question) and ask my children to find out it's area.
Area= 5m*2m=10 square meters
👉Now ask my children what they noticed?
Wheather area decreased , increased or remained same ?
👉Now I hope that they will dafinitely say that the area of the new rectangle decreases.
👉Like this I would like to give them some more examples and also say them to take some more examples like this by their own for their better understanding.
This I will make them understand that both 'A' & 'B' are wrong and 'C' is right.
C is right.
ReplyDeleteIt will be my first and foremost duty to form an idea about rectangles among children .There after by justifying answers of A,B and C ,I will involve them in a vivid discussion through rectangular observation .
ReplyDeleteA teacher will draw two rectangles A and B. The length of rectangle A is 5 cm and breadth is 4 cm, and the length of rectangle B is 6 cm and breadth is 3 cm..Then the teacher will divide the the students into two groups A and B. A group will calculate the area of rectangle A,, and B group will calculate the area of rectangle B. Then each group will present it in the class and the answer will be clear. In the same manner more examples can be taken.
ReplyDeleteThe students will be divided into groups and given different dimensions of rectangle to each group. Ask them to find the area. A vivid discussion to be undertaken.

ReplyDeleteHere in this situation as a teacher I will adopt the CRA method. To give concrete idea about area of a rectangle I will use the square blocks of GKA (Ganita Kalika Andolan)kit.By using blocks students can make rectangles and by counting the blocks they can find out the area. Again by increasing and decreasing in their length and breadth they can compare the area . In representation stage students can use the square lined note books to draw rectangle and by counting the squares they can find out the area. Finally in abstract stage using the formula of area of a rectangle they will get clear.

ReplyDeletebreadth and show that it increase or may decrease.
First of all the students should follow the correct formula and try to use their logic in solving maths questions. The teacher must teach them the formula how to use them and how to solve these type of question. Then the students can come to their conclusion.

ReplyDeleteBy increasing the length and decreasing the breadth ,the area of the rectangle will be reduced. On the other hand if we decrease the length and increase the breadth, the area of the rectangle will be increased. It can can be explained by taking proper examples.
Hear three students views regarding the area of triangle must be experiment through Ganitika sutra ie Length(breadth) with a graph paper. Students should observe that. They can compare their area and understand that the views of A and B is wrong and the views of C is correct by multiplying length with breadth and getting the area whether increasing length or decreasing breadth. The area will be decreased according to A is correct. Paper cutting having concerned length and breadth may displayed the difference of area of rectangles.
